Geeks are Social Too

Super Geek
Tonight I was at Radius helping John Piercy get set up for a social media event he’s organizing in Hamilton.

John’s a Hamilton firefighter who’s also involved in the local social media scene. In 2006, he started the Hamilton Flickr Group. (In the beginning, it had 10 members. Now there are nearly 800 members and over 25,000 pictures have been uploaded.) John has also organized tweetups here in the city.

Now he’s bringing Hamilton its first Geek Breakfast. It’s being held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 at William’s Coffee Pub.

Wait a Minute. What now?

A Geek Breakfast is an informal event where people…

… congregate over bacon, eggs, and plenty of coffee to discuss topics like social media, digital marketing, design, programming and ways to better their community.

The Geek Breakfast Website

It’s a great chance to network, even if you’re not a “geek” in the traditional sense. Maybe you’re new to social media and want to meet some of the locals. Maybe you have specific skills (like PR or marketing know-how) and want to share and collaborate with other people. Maybe you just want to sit down and have a coffee and a good conversation. It’s a neat opportunity to meet some of the people you may follow online in real life.

John was introduced to Geek Breakfasts through the work Dave Delaney is doing in Nashville. (Dave’s originally from Toronto.) Check out the central Geek Breakfast website.

Is This the Event You’re Looking For?

For my students: This event is appropriate for your social media event assignment. For those in the Saturday morning class, maybe we can even head over there after the break! (This is not mandatory though.)
